The China Cat Riders | About

About Us

One cold winter night around Christmas of 2016, an email from an old 90's bandmate arrived talking about a visit from the Left Coast to Kingston the following June. At first it seemed too farfetched to suggest a band reunion. Then it became a possibility, then it became a plan. Then it became Bob & Friends, a play on the original band name: Hurricane Bob.

Bandmates for the new band, all veterans of the Kingston music scene, were gathered and it was decided to only play the music of The Grateful Dead. We played our one-time-only special reunion show on June 17 2017, and on the way home, it became apparent that there was a bus, we were on it, and it was taking off! The China Cat Riders were born that day and have been going wherever the bus takes us since then. Furthur!

We had our first show at The China Cat Riders just over a month after that show and have been playing almost non-stop since then. Our repertoire keeps growing and so does our audience, who love to sing along with their Dead favourites and can't help but dance to the music. We're proud to continue the tradition of The Grateful Dead shows by mixing the shorter punchier numbers with some long drawn out jams, space & drums.

The China Cat Riders has been together and playing regular shows since July 2017. The current line-up has been working together since January 2019.

Reviews & Testimonials

  • "Randomly kind and senselessly beautiful."

    ~ Tim Fawcett

  • "Tight band with good interaction with audience. I hear they haven't been together too long, but I lucked out on this fine summer Sunday in Kingston to find both of these treasures: The Mansion outdoor patio, and The China Cat Riders. You don't have to be a Dead Head to appreciate this music. But you might want to give Jerry Garcia another listen after hearing this band."

    ~ Allison Rothmel

  • "Can't stay still. Tight and right."

    ~ David Lloyd Hamilton Bergstrome

  • "I look forward to seeing you guys again, China Cat Riders are always a great time!"

    ~ Josh Mosley

Introducing.... The China Cat Riders!

Kevin Bowers

Kevin Bowers

The China Cat Riders's Jerry, Kevin was recently voted the band member least likely to eat bacon, and most likely to save the planet!
Dan Curtis

Dan Curtis

Our Bobby! Dan lays it down on his Tele like only Bobby could. You'll never catch him in short shorts and a pink polo though.
Wes Garland

Wes Garland

As our keyboard player, Wes can't decide whether to be Keith or Brent, so he goes by Breith. New to The Grateful Dead, he can't get enough of it!
Adam Hodge

Adam Hodge

Founder of The China Cat Riders, and always tossing out those Phil bombs, Adam plays bass in the band. PapaCat & BandDad. Keepin' things smooth.
Pete Bowers

Pete Bowers

Pete is our Billy (or is it Mickey?), one of our wonderful drummers! He's a world traveller when he's not playin' in the band! If he's not on stage, he's probably in Timbuktu.
Simon Handley

Simon Handley

Our 2nd drummer is Simon. He's our Mickey (or is it Billy?). Off stage, you might just find him in the deepest sectors of the delta quadrant, farther than the Mustafar system.
